Open Source Platform
for interconnected virtual worlds
Getting Started
To explore realXtend worlds you will need the realXtend viewer. The viewer can be used to explore OpenSim and SecondLife worlds, too.
If you want to visit our online worlds, you will also need to have an avatar account. Any authentication service will work. Feel free to try out our experimental authentication service.
If you want to create and/or host your own world or visit virtual worlds offline, you will additionally need the realXtend server.
Downloading and installing the viewer
1.Download the viewer installer from the Downloads section of this site. You can download it from two sources. Either one will work, but we recommend downloading from SourceForge. If, however, SourceForge does not for some reason work or is too slow, download it form realxtend.org.
2.After the download has completed, run the installer by double clicking it and follow the instructions given by the installer. NOTE: When the installer asks for installation path, do not give a path containing special, such as scandic (åäö) or accented characters.
3.The viewer is now installed! You can start it from the Start menu by going to Programs->RealXtend->RealXtend Viewer.
Creating an account for virtual worlds and logging in to a world
NOTE: You will need to have the viewer installed for this. If you don't have it already, follow the steps in the previous section.
1.Point your web browser to http://users.realxtend.net/Register.aspx.
2.Fill out the form. Remember the account name and password you give. Also give your real e-mail address!
3.When you are ready, press Register button. In case something goes wrong the form will reappear with the information you just typed.
4.After successful registration you will receive a confirmation e-mail. Click on the link provided in the e-mail. Congratulations, you now have an account to our server! You do not need to repeat these first four steps when visiting virtual worlds again.
5.You can now log in. Start the realXtend viewer.
6.To User name field type: youraccount@avatar.realxtend.org where youraccount is the account name you gave when registering.
7.To Password field type your account password.
8.To Connect to field type: world.realxtend.org
9.Press Connect button. NOTE: If you do not have Flash installed you might not see all elements. You can still explore the worlds normally. You can get Flash from Adobe's web site.
Downloading, installing and testing realXtend server
NOTE: For testing you will need realXtend viewer. To get it, please read the first section.
NOTE: This guide covers only setting up the server, so that the sample world is locally accessible.
1.Download the server zip package from the Downloads section of this site. You can download it from two sources. Either one will work, but we recommend downloading from SourceForge. If, however, SourceForge does not for some reason work or is too slow, download it form realxtend.org.
2.After the download is completed, unzip the package.
3.To start the server, go to the folder where you unzipped the package and double click StartStandaloneRexServer.bat -file. (If you are using 64-bit Windows, double click StartStandaloneRexServer_64bit.bat -file instead). This will open three windows each starting its own server. When all three have started you have your server up and can start testing it. Do not close any of the three windows until you don't want to run the server anymore.
4.To test the server, start the realXtend viewer.
5.To User name field type: testuser@127.0.0.1
6.To Password field type: test
7.In Connect to field select Authentication Server Home Grid. If you have not used the viewer before, it is probably already selected.
8.Press Connect button. After a short while your sample world should be open for you to explore and modify!
9.When you want to stop, quit the viewer. After that close the three server windows.
